OLSEN DIES ON SUNDAY AT EAST BEACH HOME Richard Louis Olsen, 77, died Sunday at his home on East Beach, St. Simons Island. Olsen, a charter member of St. James Lutheran Church, was born and reared in Brunswick. He moved to Sapelo Island in 1925 where he served as chief engineer of the Yacht Zapala. In recent years he was captain of the University of Georgia Marine Institute Research vessel Kit Jones, and retired in 1964 after 40 years service on Sapelo. He is survived by his wife, Marie Morrison Olsen; two sisters, Mrs. Chris Nielsen of New York and Mrs. Neal Gates of Phoenix City, Ala.; five children and 10 grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Elizabeth O. Lewis of St. Simons, Cdr. R.L. Olsen Jr., of Virginia Beach, Va.; John R. Olsen of Brunswick, Mrs. G.B. Carrier Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., and Albert Michael of Atlanta. Funeral services under the direction of Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. from the St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jack Warner officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers are: Jim Rouse, John A. Wilson, Frederick Gude, Fred C. Heinold, Olaf H. Olsen Jr. and A.J. Long. Honorary are: Anthony Dean, Emanuel Hackel, Frank Williams Jr., Ira Rabb, Dr. Albert Green, Marcus D. Knight, C.O. Svendsen, Henry Niemeyer, James Wentz, T.L. Wiggins, Jimmy Kemp Jr., R.J. Lueders and Alfred Brockington. The body will remain in the chapel of the funeral home and be placed in the church one hour prior to services.
