Fred L. Pollard, 28, was dead on arrival at St. Luke’s Hospital shortly after the accident occurred at 2:10 p.m., according to Jacksonville police. Pollard had been on the job for three weeks. A witness said Pollard was working under the boom when it slipped from its mounting, dropped about seven feet and struck him on the left side of the head. The 3,500-pound crane pinned the victim to the deck of the ship, detectives reported. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. John S. Pollard, Thalmann; three sisters, Mrs. Eloise Gentry, Jacksonville, Mrs. Ruby Martin, Jacksonville, and Mrs. A.D. Arnett, Savannah; two brothers, Earnest Pollard, Jacksonville, and Gene Pollard, Savannah. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Gibson-Hart-Durden Funeral Home. Pollard, of Thalmann, killed in a Jacksonville shipyard accident Monday. Mrs. James T. Riley, Jacksonville minister, officiated. The Gibson-Hart-Durden Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
