SCHOEPPEL FALLS BENEATH CARS; IS KILLED--WELL-KNOWN RAILROAD OFFICIAL LOST HIS LIFE ON SUNDAY NIGHT--WAS COUPLING FREIGHT CARS--LOST HIS BALANCE AND CAR PASSED OVER BODY, KILLING HIM ALMOST INSTANTLY. WORKED FOR COAST LINE TWENTY-TWO YEARS. As the result of a frightful accident which occurred at the scale tracks of the Atlantic Coast Line about 7 o'clock Sunday night, W.A. Schoeppel, night yardmaster of that line was instantly killed. Details of the horrible accident are meager owing to the fact that there was no actual eye- witnesses of the tragedy. It seems, however, that Mr. Schoeppel was engaged in coupling cars and in some way lost his balance and fell across the tracks. There was no engine attached to the car, as it was connected with the train on the main line, the switching crew being engaged in the work of dropping or parking the cars in their respective places on the sidetrack. It is believed that Mr. Schoeppel must have fallen just as he was about to reach the coupling and too late to clear himself of the approaching car. The car ran over his legs and the lower portions of his body, crushing them almost into a pulp, one of the feet being horribly mangled. Internal injuries were also sustained and to this fact is due his death, as the other injuries would not have been fatal. As soon as the accident was discovered, the engine was removed from the body, which had actually chucked the car. Medical aid was immediately sent for, but before a physician arrived the unfortunate man passed away; in fact it is believed his death was almost instantaneous. The body was removed to an undertaking establishment on Newcastle street, where the body was prepared for burial. Officials of the line notified the members of the family, who were shocked at the suddenness of the accident. Mrs. Schoeppel was prostrated and physicians had to administer to her comfort during the night. Mr. Schoeppel was 52 years of age, was born in Germany, coming to this country as a young man, first making his home in Waycross, where he was engaged with the old Plant System, later coming to Brunswick. He has been in the service of the Atlantic Coast Line railroad for twenty-two consecutive years and the officials of that road say they have never employed a more constant, faithful and efficient man. He was a consistent member of the First Methodist church, belonged to the Odd Fellows and the Woodmen of the World, and was of that type of citizenship which any community can ill afford to lose. The deceased is survived by his widow, who prior to her marriage was Miss Minnie Townsend, a niece of Capt. W.R. Townsend, the well-known Glynn county citizen, and four children, Mrs. Lola May Boyd and Robert E. Lee Schoeppel of Augusta, and Misses Lillian and Ruby Schoeppel of this city, all of whom have the sympathy of a very large circle of friends here and elsewhere. The funeral will occur at Waycross this morning that city being the former home of Mr. Schoeppel. The body, accompanied by members of the family, left on the early Atlantic Coast Line train this morning. An honorary escort from the Woodmen of the World accompanied the remains this morning. The funeral services in Waycross will be conducted by Rev. Loy Warwick of this city and Rev. O.F. Cook of Waycross, the interment occurring in Lott cemetery, that city.
