MORRIS QUESTIONS FOR APPLICANT State of Georgia Gordon County R. V. Morris of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act (Section 1254, Code), hereby submits his proofs, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? (Give State, County and Postoffice) Richard V. Morris, Colima, Gordon County Georgia 2. How long and since when have you been a resident of this State? February 8th 1834. 3. When and where were you born? Hall County Ga. Feb. 8th 1834. 4. When and where and in what Company and regiment did you enlist or serve? 1861-Banks County Ga. Company "H" 34th Georgia. 5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? Until the Surrender 1865. 6. When and where was your company and regiment surrendered and discharged? 1865 North Carolina. 7. Were you present with your company and regiment when it was surrendered? Yes. 8. If not present, state specifically where you were, when you left your command, for what cause and by whose authority? Blank. 9. How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions and labor? Nothing. 10. What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming. 11. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz: first, "age and poverty", second, "infirmity and poverty", or third, "blindness and poverty"? Blank. 12. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such condition that you could not earn your support? If upon the second, give a full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent? If upon the third, state whether you are totally blind and when and where you lost your sight? Age and Infirmity. 13. What property, real or personal, did you posess in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1905? None. 15. In what County did you reside during those years, and what property did you return for taxation? Gordon County. 16. How were you supported during the years 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1905? By what little I could do and by the help of my children. 17. How much did your support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you contribute by your own labor or income? Not much. 18. What was your employment during 1901, 1902, 1903,1904 and 1905? What pay did you receive in each year? Farming. 19. Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support. Have they a homestead or property? Their ages and how employed? Wife, One Daughter. Wife 72 years old, daughter 32 years old. Daughter keeps house for us. 20. Are you receiving any pension? If so, what amount and for what disability? No. 21. Have you made an application for pension before? No. 22. How many applications have you ever made and under what class? Blank. Signed: R. V. Bowden of said State and County, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of R. V. Morris for pension under section 1254, Code, and after being sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? A. G. Bowden reside in Banks Co. Ga. 2. Are you acquainted with R. V. Morris, the applicant: if so how long have you known him? Fifty years. 3. Where does he reside, and how long and since when has he been a resident of this State? In Gordon County Ga. all his life a resident of Georgia. 4. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? May, 1862 Banks Co. H 34 Ga. Regt. 5. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was. 6. How long did he perform regular military duty? until Surrender April 26th 1865. 7. Whan and where was his command surrendered? Greensborough N. C. 8. Were you present when it surrendered? I was. 9. Was applicant present? He was. 10. If not present, where was he? He was there. When did he leave his command? at Surrender. By what authority he left? Parole 11. What property, effects or income has the applicant? (Give your means of knowledge). None. I have known him him personally for 50 years. He has nothing left at all ________and no means to earn a living. 12. What property, effects or income does the applicant possess in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1905, and what disposition, if any did he make of same? None. 13. Has he conveyed away any of his property in the last four years; if so, what was it, and to whom? No. 14. What is the applicant's occupation and physical condition? Farmer-old and infirm. 15. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort; if so, why? Yes because of old age and infirmity. 16. How was he supported during the years 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1905? Principally by his children. 17. What portion of his support for those years was derived from his own labor? Very little. 18. Give full and complete statement of the applicant's physical condition that entitles him to a pension under Section 1254, Code, Age and infirmity. 19. Who composes family? What property have they? Children's ages and their earning capacity? Himself and wife nearly as old as he is and one daughter. 20. What interest have you in recovery of a pension by this applicant? None. Signed: A. G. Personally came before me J. W. Erwin M. D. and D. J. Borders M. D., both known to me as reputable physicians of said County, who being severally sworn, say on oath that they have examined carefully Richard V. Morris, applicant for said pension under Section 1254, Code, and after such personal examination say that his precise physical condition is as follows: Patient suffers at intervals with Rheumatism & hernia Which renders him unable to do manual labor. and that we have no interest in said pension being allowed. Morris and Asenith Allen. He and his wife, Martha Terrell Waters Morris, are buried in Gordon County at Shiloh Methodist Cemetery near Ranger. (GINIS coordinates Lat. 342857N and Longitude 0844210W) ================== APPLICATION FOR PENSION DUE DECEASED SOLDIER BY MRS. R. V. MORRIS, WIDOW OF R. V. MORRIS OF GORDON COUNTY CO. H. REGT. 34 GEORGIA VOLUNTEERS Under Act Approved October 9, 1891 State of Georgia, Gordon County. Personally before me comes Mrs. R. V. Morris, of said county, after being duly sworn, on oath says that she is the widow of R. V. Morris, who was duly enrolled as an Indigent Pensioner from this county of Gordon and was paid a Pension of Sixty Dollars from Gordon county for 1907, and that she said that R. V. Morris died in Gordon county on the 30th day of November 1908, and at the time of his death a Pension of $15.00 was due him from Gordon county and unpaid for 1907. Applicant further swears that she married R. V. Morris on the fourth day of February, 1854 in Hall county and State of Georgia and resided with him from the date of marriage to his death as his lawful wife, and is now his dependent widow, and she asks that the Pension so due and unpaid be paid to her. Personally before me comes Allen D. Candler, who on oath says he knew R. V. Morris while in life and that he knows his widow Mrs. Martha Morris, the above applicant; that he knows that the said R. V. and Martha Morris lived together as husband & wife prior to the War & was so living when he enlisted in the Army, returning after War ended-they continued to live together as husband and wife, and that they resided together as husband and wife from date of marriage to the day of his death on the 30th day of November 1908, and I know that she is his dependent widow-and he died in Gordon County-was on Indigent Pension Roll. Wilkinson, Ordinary Fulton County WIDOW'S AFFIDAVIT State of Georgia County of Gordon Personally came before me Mrs. R. V. Morris who says on oath that she is the widow of R. V. Morris to whom. in the County of Banks State of Georgia she was married 8th day of February 1854, that she remained his wife up to the 30th day of November 1908, at which time he died, and that she has not since married. At the time of his death he was a resident of Gordon County, in said State of Georgia, and was on the Indigent pension roll of the State of Georgia, having been allowed a pension of $60.00 per annum on account of being a soldier in Company H 24th Regiment, Georgia Volunteers. What affliction have you and how does it affect you? Rheumatism, a crippled hand due to a fall and those that usually result from old age. What have you been doing to earn a support since 1st January, 1900? Have been supported by children and husband's pension. What property or effects had you on 1st January, 1900? Small home partially paid for. What have you acquired since, and what income have you now? Have not acquired anything since and have no income. What disposition have you made of any property since 1st January, 1900, and at what price and for what purpose? Sold home for $1100.00, which was used in payment of debts, burial expenses of husband etc. Deponent further says she is now a resident of Gordon County, and has continuously resided in the State of Georgia since the 22nd day of April 1834. She applies for the pension provided by the Act of the General Assembly approved December 18, 1901. Signed: M. T. Morris Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 7th day of June 1909 W. R. Rankin, Ordinary of Gordon County AFFIDAVIT FOR THREE WITNESSES State of Georgia County of Fulton Personally came A. D. Candler and E. Morris known to me to be reputable and truthful person, who says on oath that from his personal knowledge Mrs. M. T. Morris who made the foregoing affidavit, is the widow oF R. V. Morris who died in Gordon County and State of Georgia on the 30th day of November 1908, and that she has not since married; that she became his wife on blank day 18_. A. D. Candler says that he does not know the date of marriage but has knew them before the War they were residing toghether as husband and wife until his death and that she has resided in this State continuously all her life. With what affliction does she suffer? The infirmities of old age. What property or income had she on 1st January, 1900? None. What has she in her possession and control now? None. How was she supported in 1900 and 1901? Husband and children. I have no personal interest in the pension asked for. Signed: A. D. Candler E. Wilkinson, Ordinary, Fulton County Georgia PHYSICIANS' AFFIDAVIT State of Georgia Gordon County Personally came before me Drs. E. O. Shellhorse and J. M. Erwin, both of whom are known to me to be reputable physicians, who on say on oath that they personally know M. T. Morris mentioned in the foregoing affidavit, that she is personally afflicted (state disease and how it prevents her from earning a support)...Rheumatism, a crippled hand due to a fall and old age. Rankin, Ordinary of Gordon County No further pension record beyond 1909 although other family documents indicate Martha Morris received a pension through 1914. Martha Terrell Waters Morris was the daughter of John Waters and Oneida Terrell. She and Richard Venable Morris are buried in Gordon County, Georgia at Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery. (GNIS Latitude 342857N and Longitude 0844210W) A payment of $36.50 in 1914 for a casket and robe for "Mama" was listed in the settlement of Richard V. Morris' estate.
