He was born in Gordon County on Jan. 17, 1923, son of the late Paul B. and Leola Holbert Black and had spent the greater part of his life in Calhoun and Gordon County. He was of the Church of God Faith and prior to retirement was associated with the Gordon County Road Department for many years. Survivors include his wife, Mae Gravitt Black of Calhoun; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Marvin Quinn of the Nickelsville community; a brother, Porter black of Fairmount; three sisters, Betty Jean Mc/Bee of the Red Bud Community, Dorothy Hamby of Conyers, and Lois Couch of Bay Town, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral was Sunday, Aug. 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Combs Chapel of Clifford Free Funeral Home with the Revs. Paul Stover and Donald Lee officiating. The Rev. and Mrs. Luther Raines provided music for the service. Interment was in Sugar Valley Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry Bearden, Lewis Couch, Floyd Poarch, Lindsey Jackson, James Jones, and Clyde Allen. Clifford Free Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
