Grady County SPRINGHILL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Christine Burton (thehoyan@bellsouth.net) Springhill United Methodist Church Cemetery is about 3 or 4 miles north of Whigham, GA at the juncture of Peebles Still Rd. and Lime Sink Rd. Take Hwy. 84 to *****See Note at End of File***** old Hwy. 84. Go about a half mile to Trinity Rd. Continue to Lime Sink Road. Somewhere around halfway there, Trinity Rd. becomes Peebles Still Rd. It's easy to find unless you try going through the town of Whigham to get there. From the town of Whigham, I've never been able to find Trinity Rd. without going almost to the next county first. This new enumeration was completed on 21 March 2001. I have retained some names found in the Hayes survey which was made in the 1950s and the Floreda Varick survey, which I believe dates from the 1970s. These were retained because I feel sure that such people must have been buried in Springhill, even though I couldn't find their graves. Time, lightening and vandals sometimes destroy stones. Also, some old stones in all cemeteries become unreadable over time. The thing that really surprised me is that in doing this survey, I learned that the two previously mentioned surveys did not contain even half of the names of people who were buried in this cemetery at the times the surveys were allegedly done. I cannot swear to the accurateness or completeness of this survey. I did my very best to make it complete and accurate, but I'm only human! I apologize for any inaccuracies. If any who read this question any names and dates, please contact me and I'll try to recheck on my next trip to south GA. This is still an active church, with what appears to be lots of room for expansion. This is one of the best cared for cemeteries in the area but I found one thing there that alarmed me. I believe that mowing and cleanup is done by someone riding a tracter-mower and that someone drives that tractor-mower right across the graves. There were several cases where I could not read inscriptions on slabs but I thought I saw something that, from my standing up position (viewed through bi-focals), looked like inscriptions that held dirt, making it look darker. When I got down on my knees to get a closer look, I could see that what had looked liked darkened inscriptions, were tire tread marks. Obviously, the driver had driven through wet dirt, which was deposited on the slabs (along with some grass clippings) as he drove across them. I saw lots of new stones in this cemetery, which had been added at the heads of many very old stones so it appears that a lot of work has been done to restore and maintain this cemetery. It will be to little avail if they don't find a way to keep the caretaker from driving over the graves with his mower. In at least one case, I found a new stone placed in the wrong place, at least I believe it is in the wrong place. I found a very old, but readable, slab in row one. In row three, I found a very new stone placed at the head of a very old, unreadable, slab. The name, middle initial, birth and death dates were identical on both the old slab in row one and on the new head marker of the unreadable slab in row 3. There was one difference - the death year is a year earlier on the old slab. NOTE: When I couldn't sleep after spending the day in this cemetery and being away from home and my usual chores, I decided to while the time away with a newly acquired copy of the Grady County Marriage Book (1906-1921). Having looked up everyone I thought I might be related to and still not sleepy, I decided to look up some names found here. I finally fell asleep before finishing but have added those I stayed awake for, hoping it might help someone. One word of caution: It is possible that more than one person with the same name married and that the one I found could be the wrong one. I have, however, only included these dates I found if both parties to the marriage are found in the same plots. I didn't look up all. If you'd like lookups from this book, send an e-mail to thehoyan@bellsouth.net. The marriages I added are listed, thus, *(---). All are in Grady County book unless stated otherwise. As for copyrights, I know that there will be reminders on this site, but I don't believe in copyrighting anything that I did not create myself. As far as I'm concerned, you have my permission to use anything you find here in any legal way you choose. - Christine M. Burton. ADAMS, H. P. 01 03 1854 06 27 1902 E. P. in Varick survey.
