J. F. Avant This document is in the actual handwriting of John Fletcher Avant (Avent). He was married to Florence Delacey Humphries who was the daughter of Robert Bostic Humphries and Melissa Ann Barwick Humphries. In 1965 older family members remembered attending Humphries School and that it was organized by the six surviving children of John Gaines Humphries and Charity Williamson Humphries. They were William M. (Billy ) Humphries born June 10, 1848; Piety Humphries born November 24, 1849; Robert Bostic (Rob) Humphries born September 30, 1851; Sherd H. Humphries born June 25, 1855; Thomas H. (Tom) Humphries born December 2, 1857; Leonard (Lee) Reed Humphries born March 4, 1861, (another son, Elijah Humphries born 1850 died young). Humphries School was an official school recorded in Grady County school records. The first of its existence is not known but it was organized to serve the District where all of the Humphries children were taught as well as others of the community. It was in operation even up to August 20, 1915 as evidenced in the document above. All that remains today (This was written in 1992) of the Humphries School is the ground where it once stood and the well from which they drew water. For awhile the frame of it remained but with the passing of time, that, too, is gone and can only be seen in pictures that were taken. It was on, or located near Humphries Branch (the Branch also bearing the Humphries family name) and near Macedonia Baptist Church in Grady County where the majority of the Humphries family attended Church and are buried in that Cemetery. Lee Humphries, born 1891, a descendent, shared some of his memories of the school. He recalls that it was a one-room structure with all ages and all grades in the one room which was the general practice in the olden days. There were two rows of benches and desks, with one row on each side of the room. The boys sat on one side and the girls sat on the other side. He remembered teachers named Horace "Horse" Pope, Jewel Foy who married a Mr. Turner, Erie Hand who lived near Meigs, Georgia and a Mrs. Broadus who came from Tennessee. Some of the school books were Readers, Spellers, Geography, Arithmetic, Hygiene and they held Spelling Bee Contests with their writing done on slates and blackboards. Author of the document was John Fletcher Avant (Avent). Author of the remainder of the article was LaVerne Avant Carter.
