B. Brown, this week received a letter from her son, Carl, who is with the American Expeditionary Forces in France. Carl writes a very interesting letter form "some where" in France, and his many friends will be glad to know that he is enjoying good health and is doing his part well. His letter follows: Chattalion Sur Cher, France La Petite Bois June 26, 1918 Dear Mother: We are a long trip from the trenches and we haven't heard the roar of the cannons yet but we are having a good time just the same. I can understand a few gestures and a word or so of French and am learning to count this money over here so I guess I will soon be a Frenchman in full. I sure wish I could understand all these people say for they sure do treat us fine. They sure are doing their part in this war. The roads in France or those I have seen are the best I have ever seen. Every road seems to be a national highway. They wind along under an arch of trees and it's a pleasure to walk down them. I wish I was there to tell you about these pretty farms and gardens. I saw Mrs. Gratz just before I left Quantico and she was mighty nice to me. My sickness hasn't bothered me much of late and I believe I will finally be a man once more. Well, I had a momentus birthday a day or so ago. It passed so quietly that I hardly realized I was a year older. I hope to be back home before I am a man and turn me loose to knock for myself. Come to think of it I have been away from home the last two of my birthdays. The weather here certainly is fine, nice and cool. We have everything most a fellow could wish for -- good books to read, studying French, a good chow and everything running smooth. We are about four miles from the place Joan of Arc raised her second army. And we travel along the road she lead her army every now and then. I saw the hotel at Selles Sur Sher, Sunday where Joan of Arc was stopping while she was recruiting her second army. We are not far from Orleans. The ground around here fairly bristles with ancient and famous histories. There's a building a few miles from here that was erected along about Christ's time. They use stone in the place of wood and I don't think I have seen a dozen wooden houses since being here. I haven't seen Smittie yet but I hope to run into him soon. He is a jump on me and I haven't caught him as yet. Is everything running O. K. back home? I hope my business is all straightened out by now. Give my love to everybody, Your son, Carl This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.2 Kb
