The shooting took place just across the county line in Mitchell county, where Mr. Hurst had gone to visit a neighbor. Mr. Hurst, who is a cripple, and has no enemies as he knows of, being a law abiding and peaceful citizen, was standing in front of his neighbor's home, when the shooting occurred. An automobile driven by a stranger drove up at a rapid rate and stopped near where he was. A man immediately jumped out of the car and opened fire on Mr. Hurst, shooting him in the left leg, just above the knee. The party doing the firing, as quickly as possible, got back into the car and was driven off at a very rapid rate of speed. It being dark, Mr. Hurst was unable to recognize the party who did the shooting, or who was driving the car. A doctor was immediately summoned from Pelham who came at once and gave the injured man medical aid. It is generally thought that the party who did the shooting mistook Mr. Hurst for someone else, as stated he was not known to have ever had an enemy. The officers of Mitchell County were notified and are working on the case, but up to the time of press no one has been apprehended.
