O. O. WORLEY. From the Camilla Enterprise: A shortage of approximately $21,- 500 in the office of the tax collector of Mitchell county and another short- age amounting to about $2,450 in the accounts of Mr. O. O. Worley, clerk of the Board of commissioners of Roads and Revenues of Mitchell county, have been reported by auditors now at work on the county’s books. As a result of the disclosure in the tax collector’s office, Mr. W. H. Taylor has tendered his resignation as tax collector, which has been accepted by the governor, and an election has been called to fill the vacancy. In the mean- while the official records of the tax collector are in charge of Ordinary R. E. L. Culpepper, as provided by law. In the case of the alleged shortage in the office of the clerk of the board of commissioners, Mr. Worley, vigor- ously denies that he is short in any amount. He has deposited with the board, an amount sufficient to cover the shortage claimed by the auditors and he has been given time by the board to check over his books and explain the discrepancies disclosed in the auditor’s report. The conditions in the tax collector’s office first became generally known last Friday morning when Mr. W. H. Taylor delivered a copy of his resign- nation to the county commissioners. The official details of the shortage have not been made public, in fact, the audits of the tax collector’s books has not been completed, but the auditors made a report of their finds to date to the county commissioners at a spec- ial meeting held Monday morning. The meeting was held in executive ses- sion, but, this paper learns that the amount of the shortage reported was $21,500, in round numbers. It is un- derstood that the board instructed the auditors to go back over the full pe- riod covered by the present bond of the tax collector and this work will probably require a week or two longer. At the same time the auditors made a report of their findings in the ac- counts of the clerk of the board of commissioners. All of the discrepan- cies were found in the road tax ac- counts and it is said, grew out of the method used in crediting fees and commissions due road tax collectors. After a conference with Mr. Worley the board agreed to give him time to explain the matters in question and in case they are satisfactorily cleared up the money he has deposited to cover the apparent shortage will be returned to him, according to information given this paper. Since the meeting of the commis- sioners Monday many wild rumors have been in circulation, mentioning the names of other officials, as being involved in one way or another. So far as this paper has been able to learn there is no foundation for these re- ports. In some cases these rumors have done serious injustice to the public officials.
