L. Alderman Killed Thursday Night Last Thursday night, December 11th, Marvin Dollar shot and instantly killed a white man by the name of T. L. Alderman, at the home of his father, J. S. Dollar, at Capel. Young Dollar is about 17 ½ years of age. Mr. Dollar and his family had retired for the night and about ten o'clock was awakened by Alderman coming in the front door. Dollar, upon hearing a noise in the front part of the house, got up to make an investigation, and accidentally ran into the intruder. He immediately called to his son to bring him his gun, asking Alderman what he wanted and what he was doing in his house. Alderman, who was barefooted, and had his top shirt in his hand, would not reply, but kept advancing. All the time, the house is said to have been dark, Dollar not knowing whether the man was white or black. Young Dollar immediately came to his father's assistance, bringing a shot gun loaded with No. 6 shot. Sheriff Perkins was notified and went immediately to the scene, but owing to the circumstances, young Dollar was not placed under arrest. Alderman was a stranger in this county and the officers had some difficulty in learning who he was. He had worked Thursday afternoon at the cane mill of Forrester Brothers, about one mile away. Alderman had told his name to those where he worked and from an address of a party at Sylvester, it was learned that his mother and other relatives resided at Statesboro, and a sister also lived at Pelham. They were notified of the killing, his sister and brother-in- law coming down from Pelham to take charge of the remains Friday. Saturday the remains were laid to rest at Long Branch cemetery. It is not known what possessed Alderman to go to Dollars, as he did not know any one there and so far as they knew, he had no business there. Some are of the opinion that his intentions were robbery, as he is said to have not borne a very good reputation and had been wandering over the country for several years. Others are of the opinion that he arose and went from the home of Mrs. Forester to Dollar's while asleep and therefore did not know what he was doing. Another theory has been advanced that he was demented and was not responsible for his actions. With all these theories, no one will ever know his reasons for going into the Dollar home.
