Following the killing, Sheriff Perkins was notified and at 5:30 o'clock, two hours after the shooting, he with Coroner E. G. Harrell, were on the scene. An inquest was held and Mr. Reynolds turned loose by the jury. From the evidence introduced at the inquest, it seemed that Mr. Reynolds, who only recently moved into that neighborhood from Worth county, owed Doss about $11.00. Doss went to the home of Mr. Reynolds and demanded that he pay the account. Reynolds replied that Tom Whitfield had been to him (Reynolds) and asked that the money be held up, as he wanted to see if Doss would not give him an order for what the dead man was owing Whitfield. At this juncture, Doss began cursing and Reynolds ordered him off, but he would not leave until Reynolds got his gun and made him leave. Reynolds stated that he struck Doss over the head with a gun, but not hard enough to hurt much. Doss went away and returned in a few minutes with a shot gun and yelled for Reynolds going towards the house, saying that he was going to kill him. Reynolds then opened fire on Doss killing him instantly. After the shooting, Gus Doss, a brother of the dead man, started toward the fallen man, Reynolds thinking that Gus was going to get the gun, motioned to him with his gun to go down the road, which he did. Following the shooting, Reynolds stopped a car coming down the road, and told the occupants what he did and asked them to tell the Sheriff. The verdict of the Coroner's jury was as follows: "We, the jury, find that the homicide was justifiable."
