McKown, father of County treasurer, E. J. McKown, committed suicide Saturday evening about 7 o'clock at his home on the line of Grady and Mitchell counties 2 1/2 miles west of Meigs, by taking carbolic acid. Death resulted in 10 minutes, after the victim swallowed the deadly dose. No cause can be advanced why he should have committed the rash act, as he was seemingly in good health and also in a prosperous condition generally. Reports say he was in Pelham Saturday afternoon, and appeared in high spirits, even going to the moving picture show. Just before leaving Pelham, he bought from a druggist 2 or 3 ounces of carbolic acid, telling the druggist that he wanted to use it for his hogs. While at the supper table that evening, Mr. McKown suddenly arose and went to the front porch. He was closely followed by his wife and daughter, who evidently noted that something was wrong. When they reached his side, he was gulping down the fatal dose. In a frantic effort to take the deadly acid from her father, Miss McKown received severe burns on her hand, as did also the wife and mother. Mr. McKown was a well known and highly respected citizen of this county and his untimely end is regretted by all. He leaves a large family of children, being about 70 years of age. The remains were laid to rest Sunday afternoon in the Macedonia church cemetery. A large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives were present to witness the last rites over the body of this well-known citizen.
