VanLandingham. As the sun was sinking into the west on last Sunday afternoon his spirit took its flight to the regions that live beyond and the news spread that he was dead. In the death of this good man, Cairo has suffered a loss that can never be measured and a place is left vacant in the business and social life of our town that time alone can fill. Mr. Bob, as he was familiarly called, moved to Cairo with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. VanLandingham when he was still a small boy and has lived here ever since. He practically grew up with the town and was closely identified with its every movement. While still a young man, he served for a number of years as assistant postmaster. In this public place he won the esteem of the people, which he has held since. Later he was called into public life again, when he was chosen mayor of our growing little city and was again and again re-elected to this office, which he served so ably and acceptably. Lately he has been associated with the Wire Grass Feed and Brokerage Co., a local brokerage concern. Mr. VanLandingham was a splendid type of a good, true Christian manhood and the influence of his life will abide after many years have passed. He showed a manly, courageous adherence to right principles, regardless of the opinions of others, as he met many problems and issues in his public life, which has stamped him a man among men. During the last years of his life he has been in declining health and has suffered much, yet he has borne it all bravely, with only a Christian fortitude of patience. He was 45 years of age and is survived by his wife, one son, R. R., three daughters, Misses Marion, Carol and Grace, one sister, Mrs. Maxie Poulk all of Cairo, a brother, Mr. W. T. Vanlandingham of Unadilla, a sister, Mrs. T. W. Tarpley of Toomsboro and a number of other relatives. The funeral was held at the Methodist church at four o'clock Monday afternoon. Rev. W. L. Wright read the burial service, Rev. J. A. Wynne offered the invocation and Rev. W. C. Jones spoke touchingly of the life of the deceased. The floral offerings were very beautiful and were sent by large numbers. The following gentlemen selected from the Board of Stewards of which the deceased was an honorary member, acted as pall bearers: J. M. Poulk, P. H. Herring, J. E. Hall, L. B. Powell, J. S. Weathers and W. D. Clifford. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
