L. J. Rigsby Cairo, Ga. -- Bro. Lewis Johnson Rigsby was born January 9th, 1832 (1834 according to "Historic Georgia Families" by Rigsby) in Gwinnett County, Ga. He served as a Sargeant in Co. G, 55th Ga. Reg. through the Confederate war, moved to Decatur County, Ga., after the surrender and married Miss Hettie Clay. He received the degrees of Masonry at Cairo. Joined the Baptist church at Cairo about the year 1879 and was baptised by Rev. J. L. Underwood, remaining a member but removing his membership to Pleasant Grove and from there to Pine Level, and then to Capel, of which church he was one of the charter members, being very active in the organization of the church and the building of the house of worship. As a soldier, brother Rigsby was patriotic, only taking up arms in defense of his country. As a mason he regarded his obligation and was ever ready to assist those in needy circumstances. As a neighbor he was accommodating, agreeable, sociable and helpful. As a husband and father he was loving, kind and affectionate. As a Christian, we consider brother Rigsby a model. He loved his Lord and master. He was consecrated, devoted and faithful. Therefore, we feel that when the blessed Master saw fit to call him from this sinful world, out of his afflictions, which he bore with patience and fortitude, on the 17th of September, 1914, that the bereaved family for whom we offer our deepest sympathy and condolence lost its best friend, the community a useful citizen and the church its right arm. But we feel and are sure that our loss is brother Rigsby's gain. Therefore, we bow in humble submission to the God whom we love and trust, and that doeth all things well. Resolved, that a copy of this be entered upon the church record for future reference and a copy presented to the bereaved family as a token of our love and sympathy for them in their bereavement. Read and adopted in conference this 14th day of August, A.D., 1915. D. I. Smith, J. M. Prince, and B. L. Willis, Committee J. W. Cannon, Moderator and W. R. Miller, Church Clerk This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.7 Kb
