C. Matthews' Funeral Held Last Friday The funeral of Mr. W. C. Matthews who suddenly passed away last Wednesday a week ago, was held last Friday afternoon at the Baptist church. The funeral was perhaps the largest attended of any ever held in Cairo, many coming from all over Grady and surrounding counties to pay their last respects to this good man. The body was escorted from the home on Arline street to the church by the Masons and the K. of P.'s Dr. J. A. Wynne, his pastor, conducted the last sad rites. Dr. Wynne in a very impressive manner paid a high tribute to the faithfulness of the deceased as a citizen, father, husband, father, brother, a Christian and member to his secret orders. The church was filled to overflowing, many having to stand or either could not find room inside. The floral offerings were many and were among the most beautiful ever used in a funeral here. After the conclusion of the church services, the body was taken in charge by the Masons, they conducting part of their exercises at the church. The pall bearers who were all Masons, consisted of Messrs. W. S. Wight, W. A. Carr, C. H. Mize, M. J. Pearce, A. W. Miller, W. D. Barber, W. A. Shiver and Thomas Wight. The pall bearers marched immediately following the hearse, and next came the Knights of Pythias and following these marched the entire body of Masons in their regular funeral march. The next in line was the automobiles and other vehicles bearing the many sorrowing relatives and friends. At the cemetery, the Masons again took charge of the body and placed it in its last resting place, they carrying out the Masonic ceremony. In the passing away of Mr. Matthews, the city and county loses one of its best and most beloved citizens. The Messenger joins the many friends of the family in extending condolence.
