Hawthorn Passes To Great Beyond Mr. John C. Hawthorn, one of the county's most prominent and pioneer citizens passed to the great beyond at the home of his step-son, Mr. Sam Norton, nine miles above town, last Tuesday evening about ten o'clock. Mr. Hawthorn was in his 81st year. He had only been sick for ten days, yet he had been feeble for some time owing to his ripe old age. His death was due to old age. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Pine Level cemetery, being conducted by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Mr. Hawthorn was a Confederate Veteran and had resided all his life in Decatur and Grady counties. He was a loyal member of Cairo Lodge of Masons and was a regular attendant up to the last few years when his age would not allow him to attend. This gentleman was a very prominent citizen and was well known throughout the county, having been Justice of the Peace for a number of years He is survived by two step-sons, Messrs. E. A. and Sam Norton, besides many relatives and friends. The Messenger extends condolence to the bereaved ones.
