Sad Death Occured Last Sunday Afternoon

 One of the saddest misfortunes to occur in Cairo in some time was the death of 
Roy, the 14-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Knight of this city.  The little 
fellow was found last Sunday afternoon about 4:30 o'clock in an empty gasoline 
tank car in the A. C. L. Railroad yards by Emory Asbell.  When found Roy was in 
an unconscious condition.  Asbell claims that, while playing with his younger 
brother, he got on the running board of the car, and hearing some one groan in 
the tank, and also seeing that the cap was off, went on top and looked down, 
seeing someone.  He says that he immediately ran and got help.  A good many 
people soon arrived on the scene and after two attempts, a rope was looped 
about his body and in this manner he was pulled out, but in a dying condition.  
Just how long he had remained in the car is not known.  Although there was no 
gasoline in the tank, except a very small amount that is always left, owing to 
the fact that all of it can not drain out, the fumes were too much for Roy, and 
no doubt, he was overcome with them when he first entered.  From a knot on his 
head, it is thought that he attempted to climb the ladder that leads into the 
tank, and after nearing the top could not make it out and fell back 
unconscious, striking his head in the fall.  He was taken to Dr. Walker's 
Sanitarium, where he died about 8:45 o'clock, without never gaining 
consciousness.  It is said that his lungs were practically burned up from the 
affects of the gas fumes.  Just how or when he went into the car may never be 
known, as no one has been found who saw him enter.  He was last seen about 
eleven o'clock Sunday morning by some children.  The case is being 
investigated.  The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at three o'clock 
at the Cairo cemetery, being conducted by Dr. J. A. Wynne and attended by a 
large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends.  The remains were laid to 
rest in the Cairo cemetery.  Roy was a very bright boy and was well liked by 
everyone with whom he came in contact.  He was 14 years of age on October 11th 
last.  He is survived by his father and mother and five brothers, besides 
numerous relatives and friends.  We extend condolence to the bereaved ones.
