H. Connell Thursday Afternoon Mr. John H. Connell is no more. The soul of this young man passed away just at one o'clock Thursday afternoon, after being in an unconscious state for about 36 hours. Johnnie, as he was known by his many friends, had been a sufferer of sciatic rheumatism for nearly four years, having been operated upon several times for this malady, which was the cause of his death. He had spent some time in an Atlanta hospital in search of health, besides going to different springs, hoping that this might cure his ailments. Mr. Connell had suffered much, but with all his pain he always had a cheerful word on his lips for every one and when he could walk, he was always on the job at his office in the City Hall. Only a few months ago he went to Atlanta, where he was operated upon, and returned home improved and after remaining at home for several weeks returned to his duties. He remained on the job for a couple of months, but about a month ago he was compelled to go to bed, never to get up again. He has suffered much during the past four years and especially so during the past ten days, and the end was looked for most any time, yet his wonderful constitution caused him to hold on. He remained in an unconscious state for over 36 hours previous to the end. Mr. Connell was always glad to favor a friend when ever called upon and was never known to turn one down, when called upon. He will be sadly missed by not only his wife and three little daughters, his brothers and sister, but by many friends in Cairo and throughout the county. For the past four years, he has been City Clerk and Treasurer and made a very efficient official and was well liked by everyone with whom he came in contact. He was 39 years of age on the 23rd of January, and was a devoted member of the Cairo Methodist church, besides being a member of the K. of P. Lodge, the Odd Fellows and the Woodmen of the World. He was married to Miss Gertrude Pearce on January 10, 1909 and is survived by her, three little daughters, Maryella, Mildred and Wessie, one sister, Mrs. R. P. Bennett, of this city; four brothers, Messrs. Hiram and Hill Connell of Gilmer, Texas, J. E. Connell, of Cairo and G. W. Connell, who resides North of Whigham; his father, Mr. R. A. Connell, who lives with his son in Gilmer, Texas, besides numerous relatives and friends. The funeral services will be held from the Methodist church at eleven o'clock this morning, Friday, interment following in the Cairo cemetery. The local lodges, of which he was a member, will assist in conducting the last sad rites. The Messenger joins the many friends in extending condolence to the heart- broken ones.
