H. Strickland Found Dead Thursday Morning W. H. Strickland, a white man about 65 years of age, was found in a dying condition in a public toilet near Ira Higdon's Wholesale Grocery House yesterday morning at 7:25 o'clock. The old gentleman was found by William Bell, colored, who immediately went back to Higdon's warehouse and told Messrs. E. O. Alligood and L. W. Rigsby that there was a white man in the toilet, apparently dead. Both gentlemen rushed to the scene to find the old man taking his last breath. Medical aid was summonsed but he was dead when a doctor arrived. The body was removed from the house into the open where it remained until Coroner Harrell could be notified and a jury could be empanelled. Dr. Arline stated that he treated him Wednesday for organic heart trouble, while Dr. Warnell said he had been giving the deceased medical attention for the same trouble. The verdict of the coroner's jury, which was composed of A. W. Miller, R. W. Sellers, T. J. Arline, W. H. Hudson, E. O. Alligood and L. C. Powell, was that he came to his death from natural causes. When his person was searched, he had several bottles of medicine, some letters and papers, a time certificate issued by the Cairo Banking Co. for $785.00, $77.00 in currency and $3.39 in silver and pennies were found. The life history of Strickland is hard to find out, as very few people knew him, except he has been seen around the streets and stores in Cairo for the past few weeks. He spent Wednesday night with Mr. J. M. Clay, who runs a lunch stand on Central Avenue and had only left his place of business a few minutes before he was found dead. It is said that he has a sister, but no one seems to know her present place of residence or name. It is also said that he worked on the Tom Hester place during 1916 and worked for Mr. D. P. Ward near Pine Park last year. The body is lying in state while the authorities are endeavoring to locate some of his people.
