L. Benton Last Saturday morning, Mrs. W. L. Benton, who lives in the Spence district, about sixteen miles north of Cairo, was suddenly taken sick and died that night about eleven o'clock. Dr. Sumner, of Meigs, was called in Saturday morning and could not diagnose her case, so in the afternoon, Dr. Bush, of Pelham, was called in. Upon examination, Dr. Bush stated that Mrs. Benton was poisoned. Owing to her mysterious death, it is said, her people requested that an inquest be held. The sheriff and coroner were notified Sunday and an inquest was held at four o'clock Sunday afternoon, at which time Mrs. Benton's husband claimed that she had received the poison from some medicine he had been taking recently for rheumatism. The verdict of the jury was that she came to her death as a result of being poisoned, and recommended that Dr. Bush send a specimen of her blood to Atlanta for a post mortem examination. The jury will make its final verdict when the authorities in Atlanta make their report. Mrs. Benton was about fourty-eight years of age, and had been married to Mr. Benton for only about two years, it is said. It is also said that she possessed considerable property. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.8 Kb
