Austin Odom Found Dead Last Friday The sudden death of Mr. John Austin Odom last Friday afternoon was a shock to his many friends in Cairo. "Uncle Aus," as so many called him, left his blacksmith shop to go to dinner about one o'clock. Mr. Augustus Poulk, noticing that he had not returned to his work, phoned his wife, who is the niece of Mr. Odom, to go up to his home and see if he was sick and needed any help. Upon entering the house, Mrs. Poulk found her uncle on the floor dead. A large scar was on one side of his face, while his nose was broken as a result of his sudden fall. Mrs. Poulk immediately phoned for help. After a consultation it was decided unnecessary to hold an inquest as Mr. Odom had been complaining for several days, and had really been in declining health for several months. He passed his sixty-ninth birthday Thursday, the day before his death. The funeral and burial took place in the Cairo cemetery at 3:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Rev. J. G. Christian, assisted by Rev. W. C. Jones, conducting the funeral in a very beautiful and appropriate manner. He had been a resident of Cairo for about thirty years, and had lived a single man all his life. Mr. Odom had been a member of the Methodist church since early childhood and was ever loyal and true to his church. He leaves eight nieces and two nephews who survive him, besides many true friends.
