R. Harrison, went down in an old well near where the barn had stood, for the purpose of cleaning out the well. A few minutes later he called to Mr. Harrison, asking him, "What about coming out." Mr. Harrison told him "yes." He attempted to come out, but fell staggering into the well, which was about three feel in water. Mr. Harrison's son, Ben Jr., approached the well and found the negro almost dead so he proceeded to try to get the boy out. Upon entering the well he found it to be filled with gases which he soon discovered too strong for him and he immediately got out. By this time, Ira, the negro boy, had drowned. The body was brought out by a well-hook. The gases in the well were supposed to have settled there as a result of the fire they had near it the previous day. Mr. Harrison felt bad from his losses by fire on Friday, but when he found Ira Corker dead, he was hurt indeed, as he was one of his best hands on the farm, being a boy of about 22 years, very active and having good, moral qualities.
