Miss Ida Swicord Of Whigham Passes Away

Mrs. Ida Swicord, of Whigham, died very suddenly at her home Saturday night, at 
an early hour, of heart failure.  Although she had been in declining health for 
some months past, her chances of an early restoration to health were good.

Miss Swicord was 58 years of age and is survived by Messrs. D. S., S. P., T. H. 
and Joseph Swicord and Mrs. Ivy Brinson, all of Whigham, besides numerous 
friends and relatives throughout the county.  The funeral services were 
solemnized at the residence, conducted by Rev. T. C. Gardner, pastor of the 
Whigham Methodist church, after which interment followed in the family cemetery 
four miles from town.

She was a consistent and loyal member of the Methodist church, unassuming and 
gentle in her disposition and cheerful and hopeful in all her afflictions.  She 
bore them with a fortitude unsurpassed.  "We strive in vain to look beyond the 
heights.  We cry aloud and the only answer is our wailing cry.  From the lips 
of the unreplying dead there comes no word.  But in the night of death hope 
sees a star and listening love can hear the rustle of a wing.  She who sleeps 
here, when dying, mistaking the approach of death for the return of health, 
whispered with her last breath, ‘I am better now.'" After all, death is but the 
gateway to eternal joy.  Her night of suffering and affliction has been 
transformed into that perfect day of rest that is promised the weary.
