F. Chapman Killed Near Savannah News was received in Cairo last Friday afternoon, announcing the sudden death of Mr. John F. Chapman, who was instantly killed Friday afternoon while engaged as engineer in an A.C.L. pile driver near Savannah. While Mr. Chapman never made Cairo his home, he was well known here and married Miss Mattie Mills, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Mills. The Savannah Morning News in its Saturday morning issue carried the following account of his sudden death: "John Futch Chapman, 33 years of age, an engineer of a pile driver employed by the Atlantic Coast Line, was instantly killed yesterday afternoon at 3:25 o'clock while engaged in removing stumps with a derrick at Southover junction, four miles southwest of the city. The boom of the derrick fell and struck Mr. Chapman between the shoulders, breaking his neck. A force of men had been engaged in driving piles preparatory to the construction of a coal chute. The piles had all been driven and the men next began to remove all of the stumps from the location of the chute. To this end, the derrick of the driver was employed and Mr. Chapman was engaged in fastening the stumps to the end of the boom. The boom had a length of 40 feet over all, twenty feet of a lighter extension. Witnesses of the accident state that Mr. Chapman had unfastened a stump from the boom and had turned to step away, when the 5/8 inch steel cable which supported the boom snapped, sending the boom crashing down upon the head of Mr. Chapman. Death was instantaneous. The body was brought to the city on one of the shuttle trains which operate at half-hour periods between Southover and Savannah. A coroner's investigation was made last night. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mattie Chapman; an infant daughter; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Chapman of Ludowici, Ga.; two brothers, J. W. and H. F. Chapman of Savannah and five sisters, Mrs. W. S. Delk, Mrs. N. S. Delk, Mrs. N. Rolls, Miss Fannie Chapman and Miss Addie Chapman, all of Ludowici. The body will be sent this morning at 10:50 o'clock to the deceased's birthplace at Ludowici by Henderson Brothers."
