Mrs. Stephens was the wife of the late Theodore Turnbull Stephens, of the Stephens family of South Carolina, who preceded her to the grave nearly twenty years ago. She was the daughter of the late C. N. Powell and Peggy Colwell Powell of North Carolina. Mrs. Stephens was one of the accomplished daughters of the Civil War of amiable disposition, high toned, moral and Christian character, somewhat reticent in her manner and one would have to be intimately acquainted with her to appreciate her and enjoy her superior intellect. Only three children survive her, Mr. A. C. Stephens of Charleston, S. C., Mrs. M. L. Moore of Bowdon, Ga., and Mrs. J. L. Maudlin, of Cairo, although their union was blessed with eight. Mrs. Stephens was a resident of Thomas county, all of her life, and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew her.
