Barber, 55, Thomasville Mr. Spencer Arthur Barber, 55, a native of Grady county, but for the past 20 years a well-known resident of Thomasville, died suddenly at his home there about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday of a heart attack. His death, while a sad shock to his many relatives and friends was not altogether unexpected because he had suffered a series of heart attacks in recent years and had been in rather poor health. However, he had been about his usual activities prior to the fatal stroke Wednesday. Mr. Barber was born in this county Feb.16th, 1888, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Barber, pioneer residents of this section and made his home here until his removal to Thomasville. He entered the livestock business as a young man and came to be recognized throughout this section as an authority on livestock. He moved to Thomasville to be associated with the late Dr. W. E. Oliver in the livestock auction sales business and developed a wide acquaintance among the farmers of this part of the country prior to his retirement a few years ago because of ill health. Rugged honesty and frankness characterized his life and his devotion to his friends. His sincerity of purpose and his amiable disposition commended themselves to everyone. He was a member of the First Baptist Church here. In 1906 he and the former Miss Callye Powell, daughter of Mrs. J. Lawrence Powell, and the late Mr. Powell, who for a number of years were residents of Cairo, were married. Their marriage took place in Cairo. The funeral was held at Whidden's chapel in Thomasville at 5 p.m. Thursday and burial followed in the Cairo cemetery. Rev. T. F. Calloway of Thomasville, officiated, with the following as pallbearers: L. H. Blackburn, C. M. Dixon, C. W. McRae, O. G. Rosser, A. M. and Kelzo Singletary. Immediate survivors include his widow; one son, Marvin Barber, Greenwood Plantation, Thomasville; four brothers, M. A., W. R. and G. C. Barber, Tallahassee, and E. D. (Nonie) Barber, Quitman; and four sisters, Mrs. Russell Sutton, Cairo, Mrs. J. Will Miller, Miami, Mrs. Norman Maxwell, Whigham, and Mrs. Claude Sapp, Tallahassee.
