T. Odom Dies Suddenly It is with a feeling of sadness that we are called upon to chronicle the sudden death of Mr. W. T. Odom, one of Cairo's model Christian gentlemen, and which sad event occurred on Thursday of last week, about 4:30 o'clock, in the store of Messrs. Wight Bros. Co. Mr. Odom had just walked into the store chatting merely, in the best of humor and apparently in the best of health, and on sitting down upon one of the stools he leaned forward and fell to the floor, and giving one or two gasps passed into the spirit world. Dr. J. B. Warnell who was in the drug store, was hastily summoned but when he arrived the spirit of W. T. Odom had returned to the Giver, where is prepared a place of rest for all those who lived the life such as he lived. Mr. Odom was 66 years of age and an old Confederate soldier, and it can be well and truly said that he has fought the battle and surrendered to Him who doeth all things well. We all know that is well with "Uncle Dick" as so many familiarly called him. He was a member of the Methodist church and was not only a member, but a regular attendant, and there are few left behind who would be more missed than will be Mr. Odom. None knew him, but to love him, as the writer so well knows, not alone for his Christian walk in life -- for he lived his Christianity --but also for his many, very many, noble traits of character and gentle manners. He was a friend in every sense of the word and charitable to a fault. The wail of the widow and the cry of the orphan was never heard without receiving his aid and sympathy. He had lived in Cairo for a great many years and was widely known in all this section of Georgia and all knew him to have been one of the noblest works of God. Mr. Odom was never married, and he and another brother, Mr. J. A. Odom, lived together. He leaves besides his brother, several relatives, and a host of friends to mourn his going. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. C. Jones, at the Methodist church last Friday evening, and the interrment taking place immediately afterwards in the Cairo cemetery. Thus has passed away one of Cairo's best and most highly respected citizens and one who will not only be missed at home and around the fireside, but by hundreds of friends and companions in Grady and adjoining counties but in the business world. To the stricken brother and relatives and sorrowing friends the Messenger tenders its sympathy, and trusts that when that hour arrives may we all meet him in that land where parting is not known and where the weary are at rest.
