F. Powell On Sunday night, the 17th, Mr. B. F. Powell, better known to all as Uncle Doc Powell, departed this life. He was born in August, 1846, in that part of Grady county which was then Decatur county. In early life he attached himself to the Methodist church and throughout his entire life he was a devout and faithful Christian. He served the last year in the Confederate army and was a faithful soldier. He married in his early manhood, Miss Emma Martin, daughter of the late Joshua Martin, one of the pioneer Baptist ministers of this section. Mr. Powell had for many years been a member of the Masonic fraternity. He was for years one of the leading merchants of Cairo and was admired for his firmness and rugged business honesty. Perhaps in no other walk of life was Uncle Doc's influence for good so much felt as it was as a Sunday School teacher. For more than thirty years he taught a class in the Methodist Sunday School, and his faithful and earnest teachings have long been felt in the hearts and lives of the member of his class and his good work will live on until the end of time. In every walk of life he displayed those noble traits of character, that caused him to be recognized as a Christian gentleman by all who knew him. His funeral was conducted by his pastor, Brother Towson, from the Methodist church, on Monday the 18th, at 3:30 p.m. assisted by Reverends J. B. Wight, W. C. Jones and Dr. R. H. Harris. Dr. R. H. Harris, his intimate friend and life-long acquaintance, making the principal talk and delivering an appropriate eulogy on the manly character and Christian virtues of this good man. One of the largest crowds every known to assemble at a funeral in Cairo, crowded the Methodist church to pay their last tribute to this departed friend, and the floral offerings were most beautiful and abundant. At the close of the church services his remains were carried to the Cairo cemetery for interrment, followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Powell, one daughter, Mrs. C. E. Mauldin, six sons, Aden, Audrey, Frank, Martin, Eugene and Louis, and two sisters, Mrs. M. L. Wight of Cairo and Mrs. J. W. Arnold of Pelham, and numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives, who with a host of friends mourn his loss.
