For many years, he lived with his wife and a large family on his farm about six miles north of Cairo, where by hard work and upright and consistent dealing, he built up a splendid character, accumulated a good property, and by the cordial assistance of a noble and consecrated wife, reared a large family that are a credit and a joy to them. For the past two years or so, unable to take an active part in life's work, he recently decided to move near Cairo and here spend his declining years. He had been at the new place but two months, or so, when he was stricken down with another stroke of paralysis and lingered only one week, passing away as in a sleep in peace and quietness. Mr. Bennett has been for over twelve years a faithful and consistent member of the Methodist church, at the Concord charge. He had just moved his membership to the Cairo church. The funeral was held at Tired Creek Church and services conducted by Rev. Walter C. Jones, assisted by Dr. R. H. Harris, both of whom made brief addresses. Rev. W. E. Towson was unable to be present, because of a conflicting service at the protracted meeting. The gathering of friends to do him honor was very large and more than filled the old church and although the hour was late the large concourse lingered till their old friend and brother was laid away in his final resting place, in the old family burying plot. Brother Bennett was a good man and was not afraid to die. He met the last enemy without any fear and answered "ready" when the summons came. This old and honored citizen is survived by a loving wife and five sons and five daughters, as following: W. H. Bennett, Tifton, Ga., R. P. Bennett, Grady County, R. L. Bennett, Moultrie, Ga., B. E. Bennett, Jacksonville, Fla., Kedar M. Bennett of Cairo, Mrs. J. L. Griffin, Mrs. Fentress Walker, Misses Mamie and Ollie Bennett, and Mrs. P. B. Gray, all of Grady County, the last being a step-daughter. He has three living brothers and three living sisters, as follows: James H., Jeff D. and Charles A. Bennett, all of Grady County, Mrs. Wm. Freddrick of Bainbridge, Mrs. J. H. Newsome of Lee, Fla. and Mrs. Jack Boyt of West Florida. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
