G. T. Hurst, in the death of his wife. His children have suffered an irreparable loss. The sister and other relatives of the deceased realize a privation, indeed. The neighbors and personal friends of Mrs. Hurst will hardly find another to fill her vacated place in their esteem. A truly good woman has passed away. Miss Ellen Jane Ramsey, one of the three daughters of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Ramsey, formerly most estimable people of Thomas County, Georgia, was born at the country home of her parents, Feb. 14th, 1835. Under the guidance of a good mother she was trained, from earliest childhood, in all those domestic accomplishments that distinguish the well-equipped housewife. At a very early age, she was united with Liberty Baptist Church, at Grooverville, a small country village near the present line between Brooks and Thomas counties; and, from that time, to the day of her death, no word of reproach was ever heard uttered against her Christian character. On the 6th day of May, 1851, Miss Ramsey was married to Mr. George T. Hurst, of Thomas county, a young farmer who afterward became, as he still continues, a minister of the Baptist denomination. She made him a good, true wife, a help- mate, indeed; and, after more than sixty years of companionship with her, he is now inconsolable over his loss. Of that marriage, eight children were born; four of whom survive their mother. Of the four dead, two passed away in early childhood, one, Miss Carrie, a lovely girl, died at the age of seventeen and the other, Ira, lived until about five years ago. The four living children are Mr. William J., Mrs. James M. Dekle, Mr. James E. and Mr. George W. all of whom are married and reside in Cairo. One sister survives the subject of this sketch: Mrs. Joshua Barrow, a very lovable old lady of eighty, who resides with her son, Mr. W. C. Barrow, at a short distance from Cairo, in Grady county. Mrs. Hurst had been in quite infirm health, for several years preceding her last illness, and when stricken down a few weeks ago was too feeble to rally from the attack. She suffered terribly, for about a week before the end; having bore the trial with all possible resignation and more than once before she finally succumbed, she expressed her perfect submission to the will of God. The end came at 12:30 p.m., Nov. 29th, and the funeral services, conducted by her pastor were held at 2 p.m. the following day. All the members of her family, except two or three grand children, who were out of reach, were present, and the obsequies were also attended by a large number of sorrowing friends.
