All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Janet Sumner gws0675@peoplepc.com January 9, 2004, 10:22 am The Cairo Messenger, February 17, 1978 The Cairo Messenger, February 17, 1978 Pete Willis Dies Friday Popular Citizen Dies On Farm In Tragedy Ransom Foster "Pete" Willis, 67, a popular Grady County citizen who owned and operated an attractive farm on the Cairo-Camilla Highway about six miles north of Cairo, Rt. 1, met a tragic death last Friday afternoon, Feb. 10, when he was crushed under a tractor that accidentally overturned and pinned him beneath it, officials of the Sheriff's Department and others who investigated reported. The tragedy was reported by a worker on his farm, it was revealed. He was reportedly preparing a site for a farm pond when the tractor suddently overturned. Many relatives and friends were greatly shocked by the news of the tragedy. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, at Pine Level Baptist Church with Rev. Freeman Allen officiating, interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Ronnie Connell, David Connell, Ray Connell, David Harrison, Charles Powe and Vaughn Bond. Honorary pallbearers were Eldron Whigham, Gene Powe, Jack McKown, Wesley Collins, Willard Powe, Walter Godwin, Cecil Connell, James Maxwell, Lynn Womble, George Bond, Bob Ferrell, Bill Griner, Ed Harrell, Howard Harrison, Fred Norton and Roland Waldron. Mr. Willis was born in Grady County on April 29, 1910 to the late Henry Jackson and Mary Jane Barrett Willis and was married to the former Rebecca McKown on Jan. 1, 1933, who survives. He spent his lifetime in Grady County and was an outstanding farmer and a member and deacon of Pine Level Baptist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Rebecca M. Willis, of Cairo; two daughters, Mrs. Jane Willis Bentley, Shellman, Ga. and Miss Carolyn Willis of Cairo; another daughter, Sue Willis Poppell, preceded him in death on March 25, 1970; four grandchildren, Glenn and Steven Poppell, of Whigham, and Kenny and Danny Bentley, of Shellman, Ga.; two brothers, Clarence and Joe Willis, both of Cairo.
