She had been sick for several weeks previous. After undergoing an operation in the Baptist Hospital in Atlanta about a month ago, she was attacked with influenza. On the 29th of February, the doctors thinking she was much improved, allowed her to be removed home. The trip seemed too much for her, from that time, she gradually became weaker. She was Miss Maxie E. Vanlandingham, before her marriage to Mr. E. Joseph Poulk, Sr. in 1887. Her husband preceded her to the Great Beyond in 1900. She was fifty-three years of age. When she was a girl she was converted and joined the Baptist church and until the day when it was said to her, "It is enough, come up higher," the church had no more devoted and loyal member. She was a woman who bore her troubles and sufferings with great patience. She always seemed jovial and met everyone with a smile. She was a great admirer of the beautiful in life. The council of a loving mother ceased. But may Jesus ever guide and comfort in the sad hours of bereavement. The funeral and burial services were held at the local cemetery, Wednesday morning about 11:00 o'clock. Dr. B. D. Ragsdale of Macon, her former pastor, officiated. She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Cary Ragsdale of Nashville; Misses Lillian and Gladys Poulk of Cairo; one son, C. P. Poulk of Texas, and one brother, W. T. Vanlandingham, of Fort Valley.
