C. Rumph, residing about seven miles above Cairo, was found dead in bed about day light, Wednesday, by her little daughter, Emmie Lee Holland. Owing to the fact that the deceased was found dead, and there being no eye witness, a coroner's inquest was held Wednesday afternoon, the jury ringing a verdict as follows: "We, the jury, empaneled and sworn, find that the deceased, Mrs. C. C. Rumph, came to her death from natural causes, following an attack of influenza." It was brought out in the inquest that she had been sick for ten days, but no doctor was ever summoned, her husband and the family being of the opinion that none was needed. It was stated that she, with the balance of the family, had visited her husband's son several days previous to her taking ill, he having been confined to his bed with influenza. Upon returning home, several of the family had taken sick, including Mrs. Rumph. Medicine was secured, but as above stated, no doctor ever attended either Mrs. Rumph or any of the family. It was stated at the inquest, that Tuesday night before her death, that she was getting along about like she had for several days, neither Mrs. Rumph or members of the family thinking that she was in a serious condition. Members of the family retired about nine o'clock, her 14 year old daughter, Emmie Lee Holland, sleeping with her. About midnight, the mother woke up the little girl to give her a dose of medicine, which she did. The little girl arose about day light Wednesday morning and went and built a fire in the stove, returning to the bedside a few minutes later to find that her mother was dead, her body being cold. It is thought that she had been dead for a half hour or longer. It is thought that owing to the feeble condition of the deceased, that after she contracted influenza she developed pneumonia, which was the direct cause of her demise, as it was sworn at the inquest that her lungs were badly affected. The deceased who was formerly Mrs. Henry Holland, is survived by her father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. ? Sawyer of Mitchell County.
