It is about 6 miles north of Greshamville; and located about 30 yards into the woods from Farmington Road. It was previously identified as the "Brown-Jones" Cemetery per the book "The Cemeteries of Greene County Georgia" by E. H. Armor; 975.8612 V3. After much research I was able to discover that this was the land owned by my ancestors William Hillsboro Swinney and his wife Margaret "Peggy" Dudley Moore Swinney who died in 1861 and 1865 respectively. There are only 3 marked graves here, but as many as 18 marked just with field stones at my last count. Last Name First Name Middle Name Birth Death Comment ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brown Luvenia Adaline Swinney Smith 28 Sep 1837 18 Feb 1898 married 1st William C Smith 2nd Joseph H Brown Jones Charles Theodore 'Sing' 24 Apr 1860 24 Nov 1922 Youngest son of Sterling Washington Jones and Martha Ann Swinney Jones Jones Charles W 3 Oct 1894 10 Nov 1956 son of Charles Jones and 2nd wife Elizabeth Johns Jones Additional Comments: Luvenia Adaline Swinney married 1st, William C Smith 25 Jan 1859 in Greene Co. William C Smith died in 1864 (possibly in the Civil War). They had two sons; William Edwin Smith; and John Swinney Smith. Luvenia remarried Joseph H Brown 12 Sep 1871 in Greene Co. Luvenia was willed the land that was given to her mother after her father's death; which she inherited after her mother's death in 1865. My ggg grandmother Martha Ann Swinney Jones, per her obituary (The Weekly Madisonian issue 8 Feb 1901) lived on the family farm almost her entire life; even after her marriage to Sterling Washington Jones of Warren Co GA. They lived for a brief time in Atlanta, but otherwise on the family farm property. Martha had inherited 800 acres from her father per his will probated in 1861. Per her obituary; she was buried at the Swinney farm family cemetery alongside her husband. So although they do not have a marked headstone, it's definite they were buried there. Her youngest son Charles Theodore "Sing" Jones has one of the marked headstones; as well as one of his sons Charles W. Jones. It is very likely that Charles' first wife Ella Cassandria Marable is buried at the farm cemetery; and also his second wife Elizabeth A.Johns. My gg grandfather William Hillsboro Jones,(Martha and Sterling Jones's eldest son) is also very likely buried at the family cemetery. It is not known if his wife Sarah Elizabeth May Jones, might also be buried there. Others in the family who are likely buried here are William Hillsboro Swinney and his wife Margaret "Peggy" D. Moore Swinney; Susan Overton Swinney Few and her husband Camillus Levi Few who both died in Madison, Morgan Co 1898 and 1896 respectively. I have not found any other grave for William and Peggy Swinney's son Dr. "Mark" (William) Edwin Swinney who was married to Sterling Jones' sister; Emeline Immaroe Jones. He was living in Richmond Co GA at the time of his death. Mark Swinney (as he was usually called) was a physician and Surgeon during the civil war. It's also possible he and Emeline are buried at the Swinney farm cemetery. My family has donated a plaque which has been placed at the cemetery per permission from the current land owners. The plaque marks the names of some of those in our family who we believe are buried there.
