While he is interested in the subject, and has suggested an export credit arrangement to stimulate movement of the 1931 crop, the chief executive himself has not formulated a definite plan of restoring a measure of economic security for the southern farmer. Mr. Hoover's suggestion for the setting up of a credit basis for exporting the staple abroad was made to several representative bankers. He discussed the idea last week with Eugene Meyer, governor of the federal reserve board and W. L. Clayton, Texas cotton merchant. The proposal is now the subject of further discussions between bankers and cotton exporters here and abroad. The farm board, whose rejected plan of destroying one-third of the present crop evoked criticism and a flood of counter suggestions has no part in these talks. The president has endorsed no single plan. The farm board apparently has determined to limit its activities in the situation to attempt to bring about acreage reduction and assist in holding cotton through co-operatives. It has no intention of making further stabilization purchases, and probably will retain its stocks of 1,300,000 bales for another year. Any immediate increase in price therefore seems to hinge on the prospects of passing "no 1932 cotton" or acreage reduction bills in the south or the arrangement of credit for foreign buyers. ----------------------------------------- CHURCH NOTICE There will be preaching at the Reese Christian church, Sunday, September 20th, and will continue for three days. Public cordially invited. Rev. F.L. Shelnut, pastor, will do the preaching. ------------------------------------------ GREENE COUNTY FAIR The Greene County Fair will be held the week beginning October 19th. A complete premium list has been prepared by the county agent and directors, and everything will be in readiness for the opening day. Morgan county will hold no fair this year, so we will have to go down to our sister city for carnival amusements. The directors of the Greene county fair are determined to make it one of the best ever, despite the general depression and unrest prevailing.
