We are informed that when he was lead upon the scaffold he displayed no excitement or alarm but displayed the same stolid indifference that characterized him when the sentence of death was pronounced by the Judge soon after his conviction. He held out his hands to be bound without the tremor of a muscle. Upon being told that he had a few minutes in which to make any statement he desired, he remarked that he had none to make. The hangman proceeded to do his duty and Joe was dead with a broken neck within fifteen minutes. The execution was in the jail and was witnessed by no one but the Sheriff, a necessary guard, the physician (Dr. Gheesling) and a few friends of the condemned. Among the latter was Joe's mother. That must have been a singular feeling that would prompt a mother to witness the execution of her son.
