The Daily Constitution, Atlanta, GA, January 5, 1877 A Handbook of Georgia. Dr. Thomas P. Janes, the state agricultural commissioner, has for some time been engaged in supervising the compilation of a volume which will be known as the “Handbook of the state of Georgia.” The volume has been completed, and will be ready for delivery in a few days. Judging from the table of contents, at which we have been permitted to glance, the book will be one of the most valuable contributions ever made to the material history of Georgia, and we have no doubt that it will succeed in convincing those who were opposed to establishing an agricultural bureau, and whoever no opposed to its continuation on that score of economy, that it is really one of the most important, necessary and economical departments connected with our state government. Dr. Janes’s volume contains two hundred and fifth pages, and the information therein given as to the material resources of Georgia—developed and undeveloped—is calculated to not only open the eyes of strangers but to astonish even our own people, and if it be judiciously circulated in the north and northwest the facts and figures therein clearly and carefully set forth will have the effect of turning a steady stream of immigration in this direction, and just such immigration as the state needs. We have not time to analyze the table of contents, but it is sufficient to say that it is complete in every respect—comprising information in regard to every class and every interest, and treating of the social, commercial and physical condition of Georgia. The volume is rendered additionally valuable by a geological map of the state, the first ever compiled from authentic data.
