In the Constitution several days ago it was briefly stated that Dr. Thomas P. Janes, commissioner of agriculture, would resign his office. This statement was denied promptly in a city paper upon the alleged authority of Dr. Janes himself, but the latest official event of yesterday proves that we were correct, nevertheless. At a late hour yesterday, upon the return of Governor Colquitt from Decatur, whither he had been upon some part of the state’s business in the DeKalb superior court, the resignation of Dr. Janes was handed in at the executive office. We have not a copy of the document and cannot say what reasons are given for the step by the commissioner. We were informed early in the morning of the coming event but did not undertake any inquiry into whatever private reasons might have caused the resignation. The governor received the tender of resignation, but has reserved his action upon it, probably until to-day. It is of course known to the public that a special committee of the house is at work investigating the affairs of the department. They have taken considerable testimony, and Mr. J. Henly Smith is now engaged in thoroughly looking into the books of the office for the committee. Mr. Livingston, of the committee, stated yesterday that the date for making up their report had not yet been fixed. It is claimed publicly by parties professing to know that facts have been discovered that would have compelled the removal of the commissioner. It is claimed, per contra, that as he is an officer of the same status as Col. Nelms, that he has tendered his resignation principally to relieve the governor of the necessity of passing upon his case, but that nevertheless he has and will make a thorough defense to any and all charges that may be brought against him. As to his successor there is already a great deal of speculation. There are candidates also. Mr. J. S. Newman, one of the clerks in the department, is an applicant for the succession to his late chief and is backed by quite an array of advocates. Dr. Henderson, of Newton county, a former candidate, is again in the field and arrived in the city on yesterday afternoon’s train, from Covington. We have heard one or two other names mentioned, but whether by authority or not, we do not know.
