A few days ago Dr. Thomas P. Janes, the commissioner of agriculture, resigned his office. In the hurry and rush of subsequent proceedings we have not said what we now --- pressure in saying. There is no charge in all that the committee of investigation will report, or no evidence we have in all the testimony that it will add-----, that will go to reflect on Dr. Janes’s integrity or honesty. There may be some triffing losses and some small pieces of carelessness, but there is nothing that stains the character. The committee itself testifies to this, as we understand every member of the committee, except one that was absent, signed a paper requesting the governor to accept his resignation. As to the slight items of bad management alleged against Dr. Janes, we think they are outweighed by his devotion to the bureau. He said of this to a Constitution man on yesterday: “I have tried, as God knows, my best to do my duty, and my whole duty in the department of agriculture. I have given all my time, and all my energies to it, and I feel that I have done my duty. I have loved the department because I have seen in it great possibilities of good to the farmer, and when I felt that my presence might be doing it a harm I gave way without a moment’s hesitation. I have never had any thought except to forward its interest.” Dr. Janes will return to his plantation in Greene, where he will doubtless enjoy quiet and tranquility. His entire official term has been one consistent and unremitting fight and struggle. He has had to defend his department at every session of the legislature and at the session of the convention.
