Janes, of Cedartown, was on a visit to her relatives and friends in this village and vicinity. We have now to announce that she has resumed the name of her girlhood by becoming the wife of James H. Peek, of Greene county. The circumstances of this marriage are extraordinary, and prove the oft-repeated assertion that “truth is stranger than fiction.” Thirty-six years ago James H. Peek and William F. Janes were rival suitors for the hand of Miss Emily Peek of the county, then a maiden of seventeen, fresh from school. Both of the young men were “worthy and well qualified,” and “long time in even scale the battle hung.” Her father, however, objected to Mr. Peek on the ground of their close relationship—they being first cousins through their fathers and second cousins through their mother—and she yielding to his preference married Mr. Janes. With him she lived for a third of a century, becoming the mother of thirteen children. One of these, Charles G. Janes is a member of the present house of representatives in the Georgia legislature. In the meantime, Mr. Peek submitted to his disappointment and married another cousin, Miss Jane Swain, who, after living with him for more than twenty years, died some years ago. Some days since the widower and widow met at the house of Dr. Thomas J. Peek and with the promptitude for which these classes are said to be proverbial they concluded to consummate the engagement that was interrupted so long ago. On last Thursday week, at the residence of Thomas J. Peek, Rev. J. H. Kilpatrick pronounced the words which shall henceforth unite the destinies of Mr. James H. Peek and Mrs. Emily P. Janes. We wish them all manner of happiness.
