F. Geer, Jr., a well-known merchant and postmaster of Penfield, left his home saying that he would walk over to his father’s, a distance of about two miles, and spend the day. When night arrived and he did not put in his appearance, his immediate family began to feel some apprehension about him, but later his brother, W. B. Geer, came over to Penfield, and when asked about the absent one, stated that he had not been to his fathers. This aroused the uneasiness of his friends, who immediately went in search. After a couple of hours he was found by Messrs. P. M. Cheney and John T. Colclough in a pine thicket, cold in death’s imbrace. He was lying on his back with his head resting up on one hand, while the other clutched a pistol. A bullet hole was found under his right ear, coming out at the left corner of his mouth, the jugular vein was severed. He seems to have died without a struggle. His friends are at a loss to account for the horrible affair, unless it be that he was in a state of mental aberration caused by his delicate health. He was a great suffered from dyspepsia. His finances are in good standing with a promising outlook.
