J. S. Callaway Passes Away

   Mr. John Sanders Callaway died Sunday, April 11th at his home in 
Greensboro, following a long illness.  He was born Feb. 2, 1889 in Bairdstown, 
Greene County, Ga.  His parents were Sara Eliza Wooten Callaway and Rev. John 
S. Callaway, leaders in the religious, social and civic life of the county.
   Mr. Callaway received his education in the Penfield public school and was a 
graduate of Mercer University Law School.  He wae [sic] a 32nd Degree Mason of 
the San Marjno Lodge and a devoted member of the First Baptist Church.
   Mr. Callaway led a very useful life.  He was Mayor of Greensboro for 12 
years, clerk of the city for 32 years, ordinary of Greene County eight years 
and a member of the State House of Representatives for two terms.  He was also 
chairman of the Greensboro Board of Education for 12 years.
   For a number of years he taught in the Sunday School of the First Baptist 
Church.  At the time of his death he was a member of the Evans Bible Class.
   Mr. Callaway was a very thoughtful man.  He wrote a beautiful letter and 
whenever one of his friends or acquaintances received some honor or did 
something worthwhile he always took time to write them a personal letter and 
compliment them.
   He was greatly beloved and will long be remembered.
   Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the First Baptist Church.  
Rev. E. A. Kilgore and Rev. Charles Kopp officiated.
   The pallbearers were Callaway Brown, Ted Dunn, Ben Drake, W. R. Boswell, E. 
R. Boswell and W. R. Johnson nephews of Mr. Callaway.  Interment was in the 
city cemetery.
   Mr. Callaway is survived by three sons, Col. John W. Callaway, 1st Cavalry 
Division, Korea, W. R. Callaway, Greensboro, T. S. Callaway, Statesboro; two 
sisters, Mrs. Edna Mae Boswell, of Greensboro, and Mrs. Berta Brown, of 
Woodbury; eight grandchildren.  McCommons Funeral Home was in charge of 
arrangements.
