GEER Harry Hill Geer, 78, died Friday following a sudden illness of only a few hours, after being carried to the Boswell Memorial Hospital. Mr. Geer was Greene County's oldest active business man. He had been a merchant for 60 years. He was born July 31, 1886 in Bairdstown, Ga., the son of J. J. Geer and Minnie Young Geer. On May 25, 1912, Harry Hill Geer and Hopie Atkinson of the "Gray Lands" community were united in marriage. Of this union a on [sic], Harry Lee, was born and he, with his mother, survives his father. Other survivors are sisters, Mrs. Julia Geer Pitts, Mrs. Reba Norman, Mrs. Annie Bell Kitchens, of Decatur; Mrs. Irene Wheeler, Mrs. Berta Marchman, of Savannah and brother, Joseph J. Geer of Avondale. Funeral services occurred at the graveside Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. E. A. Kilgore officiating. The pallbearers were O. A. Moorhead, Lloyd Davis, Henry Maxey, C. W. Smith, Jack McGibony and Marvin Merritt. Internment in Greenview Cemetery. As a young man, Mr. Geer traveled for a grocery house. He covered his territory in auto being amoung [sic] the first traveling men to use an auto. He later opened a grocery store in Greensboro. At onetime he was a director in both of the banks in Greensboro. Mr. Geer was the last member of the Greene Rifles, a local military company that passed out of existence in the early 1900's. Mr. Geer was well known and respected throughout Greene County where he has been a land owner and merchant over a long period time. He had been in business for sixty years in Greensboro and could claim the distinction of having been a merchant for more consecutive years than anyone else in the town. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Geer will be greatly missed. Among those from out-of-town attending the funeral of Mr. Harry Geer on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Word, Jr.; Mr. Russell Pitts, Mr. Dick Baker, of Atlanta; Mrs. Reba Norman, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Norman, Mrs. Preston Johnson of Decatur; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Geer, Miss Nora Geer, Mr. Jeff Geer of Avondale; Miss Allene Geer, Penfield; Mr. Henry Geer, Bogart; Mr. and Mrs. Love Atkinson, Mrs. Mamie Sue Few of Madison; Mrs. Eula Williamson and Mr. Williamson, Washington; and Mrs. Frank Askew, Union Point.
