"C" April 1865. --------------- This drum was the original drum of the 3rd Georgia Regiment of Infantry, C.S.A. The drum came to the regiment with Company C, Dawson Grays from Greene County at the organization of the regiment on 4/26/1861, at Portsmouth, VA. The first and only drummer was Seaborn Barnwell of Company C. When the regiment was organized, he was made Regimental Drummer. This drum beat all the calls made for the regiment for all purposes from April 26, 1861, to the surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. When the regiment surrendered and stacked their guns, the drum was hung on the stack by the drummer and left to its fate. Minor Hobbs, one of the truest and best of soldiers of Company C, could not walk away and leave the drum. He turned back and took it from the stack of guns on which it hung, swung it around his shoulders , and brought it to his home in Greene County, Georgia. Hobbs kept and cared for the drum until in his old age he delivered it into the hands of Capt. W. A. Wright, a member of the regiment. Wright kept the drum and finally delivered it to the committee to be placed in the Georgia Capitol. My sister asked the Director of the State Capitol Museum if she had a copy of what was written in that letter. Below is the transcript she gave her. There were a few holes in the letter and those places are marked by the word ("missing"), Madison, GA 11/17/1905 -------- Dear Friends and Comrade: In the excitement and confusion attending the surrender at Appomattox the official Kettle-Drum of Third Georgia Regiment (missing) have been abandoned (missing) that Private Minor L. Noors, of Company "C" rescued it, and, swung over his devoted shoulders, safely brought it to his home in Greene County. But few of the 3rd Ga. Survivors was aware of its existence until 1888, when old Minor brought it to a reunion of the Regiment, held that year (missing) place, and presented it to the Regiment, or more properly, its Survivors. Upon a question being raised as to its disposition, a motion was made, and the same obtained, that "Commodore" Dexter be made its custodian during his life-time. No provision having been made for (missing) Dexter's death, which (missing) the idea came (to) me that it could not be more fittingly placed than in the hands of the son of the illustrious, and to each survivor of the 3rd Ga. Regt. ever to be lamented Gen'l Ambrose C. Wright, first Colonel of the Regiment. Not wishing to assume the whole responsibility at the late Reunion of Ga. Veterans held at Macon I advised with Capt. J. W. Mathews, of Fort Valley, Capt. Matt Rice, of Augusta, and a few other comrades there present, all of whom heartily approved my suggestion. Hence, and without first asking your consent, through to-day's Express I place it in your devoted hands. In the sacred bonds of immediate war comradeship, I remain Most sincerely yours, W. Lindsley (?), Sec'ty 3rd Ga. Reg't. (missing), Veteran Assistant, (missing - Cap?)t. Wm. A. Wright, Atlanta, GA.
