In the event of my wife RUTH being in life at the time of my death I hereby give her all my household & kitchen furniture, four choice horses, four choice cows & calves, a choice pair of oxen, my rigg (sic) & harness, & as many hogs as she may require & the remainder of my stock of every description, also six negroes: EDDY, DAFNEY, CINDA, PAT, TOM & WILEY to have & to hold all said property for & during her natural life. I also give unto my wife a life estate in that portion of land which I have this day given to my said son, WILLIAM C. DAWSON, by a deed of gift together with my dwelling house. I hereby give my said wife full power & authority to make any arrangement with my said son in relation to the use & cultivation of said land. After her death the crop which may be on or growing on said land shall vest in my said son WILLIAM C. DAWSON in consideration of the use of said land, & should he be dead, in his legal representatives. And I also give unto my said wife at the time of my death one hundred barrels of corn, fifteen hundred pounds of bacon or five thousand pounds of pork & ten thousand weight of fodder. Second. I confirm unto my son-in-law, DAVID MCINTOSH all the real and personal estate which I have heretofore given him. I also give to the said David & his heirs an equal proportion of all the negroes which are not specially disposed in this will at the time of my death. Third. I confirm unto my son-in-law, DAVID FURLOW, all the property which I have heretofore given him. I also give unto him & his heirs an equal proportion of all the negroes which I may have at the time of my death & not specially disposed of in this will. Fourth. I confirm unto my son-in-law DOCTOR JAMES MULKEY all the property which I have heretofore given him. I also give unto my sons THOMAS & WILLIAM C. DAWSON as trustees an equal porportion of all the negroes not specially given away in this will that I may have at the time of my death for the use, benefit, maintenance, education & support of my Daughter ELIZABETH MULKEY & her children. I hereby require of my said sons, trustees as aforesaid, to retain the controul & government of said negroes for the purposes aforesaid as may seem best in their discretion. I hereby require of them to give to the children of my said daughter as they marry or come of age what they may deem just & right under the circumstances that may then exist. Fifth. I confirm unto my son-in-law FURNIFOLD H. GREENE the property which I have heretofore given him. I also give unto my sons THOMAS & WILLIAM C. DAWSON, as trustees for my daughter RUTH C. GREENE, an equal proportion of all the negroes which I may own at the time of my death & which are not specially disposed of in this will for the benefit, support, maintenance & education of my said daughter RUTH C. & her children should she hereafter have any. I hereby require of my said sons, trustees as aforesaid, to use, contraul & govern said negroes in that manner they may deem most advantageous for the purposes intended in this will. Should my said daughter die bearing no child in life, it is my will that said negroes shall be equally divided between my five sons, THOMAS, JOHN, REUBEN, GEORGE & WILLIAM C. DAWSON. Should my said daughter die leaving a child or children, said child or children should before he or they become twenty one years old, it is my desire that said negroes be equally divided among my five sons aforesaid or their legal representatives. Sixth. I confirm unto my five sons, THOMAS, JOHN, REUBEN, GEORGE & WILLIAM C. DAWSON, all the property both real & personal which I have heretofore given them respectively. I also give unto my said sons each an equal proportion of all my negroes which I may have at the time of my death & not specially disposed of in this will to them & their heirs forever. I also desire that every thing which I have given in the first part of my will to my wife during her natural life shall after her death be equally divided among my five sons as aforesaid or their legal heirs or representatives with the reservation there contained. It is further my will & desire that all my estate both real & personal which is not otherwise disposed of at the time of my death shall then be equally divided anmongst my five sons or their legal representatives. Seventh. I give unto my grandson GEORGE MALCOM DAWSON a little negro girl by the name of HANNAH, the child of DAFNEY, & should he die before twenty-one years of age said negro is to belong to my son GEORGE. Eighth. Should I die during the time that any crop & or crops may be on hand & not disposed of, it is my will & desire that my executors immediately sell said crop or crops in the manner they may think best & pay off my debts should any there be, & the remainder if any then be equally divided amongst my sons, THOMAS, JOHN, REUBEN, GOERGE, & WILLIAM C. DAWSON or their legal representatives. Ninth. I hereby constitute & appoint my oldest & youngest sons, THOMAS & WILLIAM C. DAWSON, my executors to carry into effect this my last will & testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 20th day of March 1823. In presence of A. PORTER J.J.C. GEO. DAWSON SR (seal) THOS. STOCKS J.J.C N. LEWIS J.J.C. Codicil to the foregoing Georgia I GEORGE DAWSON of the Greene County County & State aforesaid do make & publish this Codicil to my last will & testament in the manner following (that is to say) I give to my wife RUTH my negro man JACK (blacksmith) in place of the negro woman by the name of CINDA which I gave to her in my last will & testament. I also give in addition to what I gave her in my said last will my sett blacksmiths tools & as many farming tools of every description as she may require for the use of her farm. I also give my wife RUTH two small negroes, LOUISE(?) CHANY & AMANDA, children of DAFNEY, which is to be disposed of among my five sons after the death of my wife as directed by the said first clause of my last will, & also the future increase of said negroes, EDDY, DAFNEY & PATT. I also give my wife RUTH in addition to what I have bequeathed in my said last will for her maintenance eight bales clean cotton weighing at least three hundred pounds each. Whereas by the first clause of my last will I bequeathed the crop or crops that might be on hand at the death of my wife to my son WILLIAM C. DAWSON, but not being satisfied with that bequeathe, my will & desire is that it be divided equally between my five sons or their legal representatives together with all the other property, increase, & accumulation which may be at the death of my wife in pursuance of the first clause of my said will. And whereas by the first clause of my last will I gave to my son WILLIAM C. DAWSON my dwelling house but believing he will not move to it, & my desire is that one of my sons should occupy it after the death of my wife, I therefore give the said dwelling house to my son George with liberty to remove it for his own residence provided the land cannot be divided & laid off as to include the said dwelling on his part. And I do hereby will & declare that my said tract of land which I now live on containing nine hundred acres more or less shall be equally divided according to quantity & not taking into view the quality, the division to be governed in every instance by a deed of gift except as above declared between my three sons, REUBEN, GEORGE & WILLIAM C. DAWSON or their legal representatives. And whereas by my last will & testament I gave unto my son-in-law DAVID MCINTOSH & his heirs an equal proportion of all my negroes which are not specially disposed of by this will at the time of my death, I do hereby confirm unto the said MCINTOSH all the property both real & personal together with their increase that I have heretofore given him. But I do hereby order & declare that my will is that I give to my sons THOMAS & WILLIAM C. DAWSON as trustees for my grandchildren, sons & daughters of the said DAVID MCINTOSH (to wit) JESSIE(?), DANIEL, CATY, ANN, NANCY, GEORGE, JOHN DAWSON, DAVID CROSBY (K?)ARIZADE, THOMAS MCINTOSH all that part of the negroes which I gave to my son-in-law DAVID MCINTOSH & his heirs by the latter part of the second clause of my will, it being an equal portion of all the negroes not specially disposed of, that is to say, one ninth part, & my request is that my said sons THOMAS & WILLIAM C. DAWSON trustees as aforesaid use the said property at their own discretion to the best advantage for the benefit of said children & I further order that (if either?) of said children die before they come of age or marry their portion or part shall rest in & become the property of the remaining ones. I hereby require of any said sons to give an equal proportion as the(y) come of age. I give unto my Grandson, GEORGE MALKOM DAWSON son of GEORGE DAWSON JR, a small negro boy by the name of CUFFY, son of PATT, in the place (part?) of one I gave him in the seventh clause of my will, that one being dead. I also will & declare that my daughter RUTH C. GREENE shall have an equal part of my household furniture with my five sons, that is to say, one sixth part this I bequesth unto my said daughter & her bodily heirs and no other person or persons. And I also declare that it is my will & desire that my son GEORGE have my corner clock but the value to be declared out of his proportionable part of the household furniture. And I also wish the gin house & all belonging thereto to remain for the use of my wife during her life & the same to belong & remain on the land after her death. (seal) HENRY ROGERS RUTH FURLOW Georgia Greene County Court of Ordinary July term 1825 Personally appeared in open Court HENRY ROGERS & DANIEL JETT two of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing Codicil *annexed to the will of GEORGE DAWSON senior) who being duly sworn say that they saw the testator (GEORGE DAWSON senior) sign seal & heard him acknowledge the same to be a codicil & to be taken & to be taken (sic) as a part of his last will & testament. That RUTH FURLOW together with themselves subscribed the same as a witness thereto in the presence of the testator, & further that they each believed him to be of perfect sound mind & memory at the time of signing the same.
