YELLOW RIVER MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY Five Forks Trickum Road, Snellville, Cates District, Gwinnett County, Georgia Audited by Joyce Cowan (BjoyceCowan@AOL.com) and Scott Wilkerson (ME2Turok2@AOL.com) In Snellville, driving east, turn left onto SR124 (Scenic Highway). Go to Oak Road, turn left. Stay on Oak Road (you'll zigzag across a railroad crossing) until you reach Five Forks Trickum Road then turn left. Yellow River Baptist Church is on the left and the cemetery is along side of the church. The cemetery is on land that was donated by the Nash family to the church for a church cemetery. Also on this site is the old (over 100 years old) Yellow River School building. Apparently the current members of the church have no interest in the upkeep of the cemetery and a branch of the Nash family that lives close by tries to keep it up. In spite of their concern and care, the cemetery is deteriorating at a very fast rate. Many of the graves were simply marked with a fieldstone and those are being moved over time by grass mowers and other means. As a result, there are a lot of unmarked graves. One member of the family went to a local funeral home and was given some metal markers to mark those that could still be identified as a grave. Of course, those have no names or dates. Some of the graves are sinking. Time seems to have divided the cemetery into four (4) sections and that is the way that my grandson, Scott, and I audited it. SECTION I is closest to the street, SECTION II is a group of unmarked graves dividing sections I & III, and then there is SECTION III, which is fartherest from the street and closest to the schoolhouse. SECTION IV is the newest section and is located behind the church. We did not audit SECTION IV on this trip, but will go back in a couple of weeks. Comments are in italics and some were provided by Ruby Nash who lives next door to the cemetery.
