McCook, Minister 164 Oak Street, N. W. telephone 843-2095 Dear friends: Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It has been a long time since we had the privilege of seeing you. Trust all three of you are fine and that the blessings of the Lord have been upon you. We have been here for over two years. We have a wonderful group of people. They are most cooperative and considerate. Our church is growing steadily. We are in greater Atlanta and this county is getting quiet a bit of the overflow. Population has almost doubled in the past ten years. I am making an attempt to write a book on the ancestry of the present generation of our family. I found the obituary of my grandmothers's brother in the files of the South Georgia Conference. The following is a quote of the first paragraph: "John Lafayette Williams was born on March 12, 1832, near Montgomery, in Pike Co. He came of good sterling stock, distinguished for preaching. His mother's father, Rev. Norman Uquhart, was one of the pioneers preacher of Alabama. One of his father's brothers, Rev. Hezekiah Williams, was a member of the old S. Carolina Conference when it included the State of GA: Rev. Henry Urquhart, D. D. of the Alabama Conference, is his mother's brother; Frank Urquhart, one of the brightest stars of the Florida Conference, who died a few years ago in Albany, Georgia, was a cousin, and our esteemed brother, McK. F. McCook, of this conference, is his nephew (this was my father's brother). A sister is the widow of Rev. Sam A. McCook of the Florida Conference. I would greatly appreciate any information you can give me from the Alabama Conference records concerning any of the above. I remember talking with you about some of them when we were in Eutaw. I beleive the father of Uncle John was a local preacher. Most of the Williams and Urquharts lived in the Pine Level area, or rather were born there. I know some of them moved to Barbour County about the time of the Civil war. I am going to be in Tuskegee on March 10th for dedication of the new sanctuary and will go early enough to make some inquires at Montgomery, Pine Level and perhaps Eufaula or Clayton. We both send our love to each of you. Tell the good wife I have not been fishing in more than a year. Taking my receation mostly in golf and gardening. Love and prayers Come and see us sometime. (Signed) Sam & Annell Additional Comments: I found this church and called in December 1999. A very nice man at the church told me he'd remember this minister but would have to call me back with perhaps some way to contact his wife. When he didn't call back I wrote a letter to the church with a new address in Lawrenceville, GA. on December 20th 1999. He'd found Mrs. McCook as a resident and gave me her address. I wrote her a letter in February 1, 2000 she was living in the Lawrenceville area. I wanted to know if her husband had ever written his book about his ancestry? and I'd like to purchase a copy of the book, gave her lineage briefly. Her letter never came back nor did I receive a reply. (This above is from the Memoirs of my great grandfather, Rev. John Lafayette Williams and I have the complete copy it seems to have been written as an obit by just a friend no signature). Rev. Henry Uquhart, D. D. was an editor of the Southern Christian Addvocate so perhaps he wrote for his Uncle John L. Williams in 1888? I'd be very proud to find any of this McCook family, or perhaps where or if he preached in Alabama? This letter was given to me from a distant cousin when she learned of my research on the Williams/Urquhart family. I have found my McCook connection with the sister of Rev. John Lafayette Williams Methodist (E) minister over thirty years in N. FL. and S. GA. Lucina Williams dau of John A. (Allen) Williams in the household #901 Pike Co. Al. 1850. She was in Fl., have her widows pension in the Coleman Fl. area, near Bushnell Fl. and have posted it on the Pike Co. page. Any help finding this family or their location is greatly appreciated.
