K 53rd Regt Georgia Infantry PENSION APPLICATION for his wife Susan E. Massey Resides in Gwinnett County, has been a resident for 67 years, was born in Gwinnett Co., in 1834. Her husband, William D. Massey, was born in 1833 in Gwinnett Co., and they were married there in Sept. 1857. He enlisted in service May 12, 1862, in Gwinnett Co., and served six months. He was discharged from service in November 1862. He had measles and relapse and had paralysis and was discharged. He died in 1893 in Gwinnett Co. Reason for applying for pension. I have not been able to do anything for 4 years. general debility, nervous prostration and weakness. I have not been able to do but very little since my husband's death. I have no property or income. Have been supported by my children and they are all poor. OFFICE CONFEDERATE PENSIONS, 4-25-1901 When only six months service is relied on for the husband, specific date of the enlistment and actual discharge must be given and not conclusions. This is for the Commissioner to say when the applicant and witness states the facts, and such was not stated in this application. J. W. Lindsey, Com. of Pensions. Questions for the Witnesses. Milton Brownlee a resident of Gwinnett County. Stated he has known Susan Massey for 56 years, that years she had lived there since about 1853. That her husband was discharged from service in N. C. by his officers and he was there when he was discharged. That the applicant was a very weakly feeble woman and is not able to support herself on account of age and bad health. Affidavits of Physicians Mel T. Johnson and R. J. Bagwell after examining her state that owing to exceeding bad health and general debility from old age the said Mrs. Massey is wholly unable to earn any part of a support or attend any household duties whatever. She received a pension of $50.00 per annum until her death in 1905.
