He served as a private in Captain Terry's First Virginia regiment. He was taken prisoner and carried to England as a prisoner of war. He also served under Captain Conway according to the affidavit of William Bryant who served with him in the 14th Regiment Virginia Line. John Lawrence was born in 1737 and died January 19, 1841. He was married to Betheland Smith, September 3, 1788, by Rev. Thomas Douglas, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. April 4, 1855 she was 84 years old and so born in 1771.
